The protesters marched in the morning from the Government House to the Royal Household Bureau where he submitted the petition, alleging the government of failing its duty to protect Thailand's sovereignty.
Chaiwat was arrested along with another leader of the network Somboon Thongburan while they were walking in Lotus store on Rama I road in Pathumwan district at about 12.30pm.
Chaiwat was a leader of People's Alliance for Democracy, known as yellow shirts, who seized Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang Airport in 2008 during their campaign against government of Somchai Wongsawat, brother in law of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra.
Most of the yellow shirts leaders had already surrendered to face arrest warrant but Chaiwat did not.
Police have deployed 40 commandos at the Crime Suppression headquarter out of fear that Chaiwat's supporters may rally there to protest the arrest.
